Agrivoltaics Research
Stakeholder outreach, qualitative research & analysis, and narrative strategy
Project: Agrivoltaics: Unlocking Mid-Market Solar in Rural Northern Climates
Role: Applied Social Science & Outreach Lead
Agrivoltaics (dual land use for agriculture and photo voltaics) was a relatively new concept in rural Alaska. In a 3-year, $1.3 million project funded by the United States Department of Energy, our team of researchers from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Alaska Pacific University, and solar developer Renewable IPP required a way to communicate dense scientific findings, build trust with local stakeholders, and inform research with real insights around sustainable food systems and energy sovereignty.
I led the stakeholder outreach, qualitative research, and narrative strategy for this multi-year agrivoltaics study. This included conducting interviews, processing and coding qualitative data, and shaping a public-facing story. I also coordinated an interactive event launch that brought researchers, growers, and community members together to explore early findings and interact with the vegetation growing under the solar array.
My Approach
-
Built a base of 150 diverse stakeholders, including farmers, tribal leaders, and renewable energy developers
-
Conducted 15 semi-structured interviews, thematically coded qualitative data, and integrated findings into project messaging
-
Produced and designed a stakeholder needs assessment report
-
Organized an interactive launch event featuring wild foods prepared by an Indigenous chef, research presentations from technical experts, a foraging walk through the array for lingonberries and laborador tea leaves, and a cyanotype sun-printing activity
-
Translated technical research into accessible, engaging storytelling through an ArcGIS StoryMap, social media posts, and educational graphics
-
Expanded awareness through statewide outreach and national conferences, building relationships within the agrivoltaics community and amplifying Alaskan research to the national level
